Kavieng, in the northern part of the country was our departure port for a scuba
dive cruise around New Hanover Island a few miles to west.(
Pass your curser on the map just to the west of Kavieng for a photo
of the area.) Papuan adults and children would paddle their dugout canoes to
our anchor sites to visit and bring fruit. Children would observe the action
on the dive deck for hours at the time, waving
smiling and laughing, I can imaging how entertaining what we were doing was
to these kids. One of our dive guides arranged for a visit to his nearby village.
The men performed for us traditional daces, we had
the opportunity to see the small island village, learn a bit about the life
style, see the school and talk to the teacher and the kids. It was a trip highlight.
