Mono Lake tufa are often photographed formations. Their photographic appeal is undeniable and while visting  Yosemite and the eastern Sierras I spent two early October days in Lee Vining on the shores of Mono Lake. The  tufa  site is a small national park nearby and easily accessible by car. A short board walk to the  shores of Mono  Lake takes  you to the tufa  formations.  There is lots more to Mono Lake then just tufa, but  for this trip I  was tufa  focused.

Photo tip: The colors of sunrise and  sunset need clouds, so wait for cloudy days or  storms, although  clear days  are fine the photographic impact is  diminished. Photographing the tufa on a star and moonlight night is a real  special experience. I used my 18-200 lens which was  the entire focal range I  needed.
